All About Marin

Just moments after handing out a flier slamming Sutter’s management of Marin General Hospital, Dr. Bill Rothman stood up at Monday’s Marin Healthcare District board meeting and pledged that he will try to avoid saying anything negative about others.

His promise drew laughs from an audience that included many who blame Rothman’s dogged criticism of Sutter for the medical-care giant’s departure from MGH and its plan to compete with the Greenbrae hospital.
For decades, Rothman, a former hospital board member, has shown little restraint highlighting MGH’s shortcomings and criticizing local health-care executives, consultants, doctors, citizen advocates, district board members and others.

On Monday night, it looked as if the healthcare board’s lone option is to turn MGH into an independent, locally-run hospital. It needs an estimated $500 million to build a new wing and a private poll indicates there isn’t enough voter support to pass a bond measure to raise that kind of money.
“This is a time for healing,” Rothman said.
